This special issue of Lumières focuses on the role of freemasonry in the major social and political changes promoted by the Enlightenment. Although masonic lodges and Grand Lodges were generally not directly involved in radical activities and revolutions, they nevertheless provided an opportunity for their members, away from prying eyes, to exchange ideas and sometimes take an active part in political developments. Many of those who joined masonic lodges reflected Enlightenment values in their advocacy of religious tolerance and social improvement. The articles in this number of Lumières survey many of the leading personalities and masonic lodges the eighteenth century, covering England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Bavaria, Russia, North America and the Caribbean.
